Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed a new law on August 9 that not only bans smoking in all city parks and beaches, but also prohibits carrying, lighting, or discarding any tobacco products. A fine of up to $250 will be given to violators of the law, which went into effect on September 17. Exceptions to the ban include city-operated golf courses and designated areas of the Autry National Center, the Greek Theater, and the Los Angeles Zoo. Smoking will be permitted in filming, as long as studios apply for a permit from the Recreation and Park Film Office.
